Code completes the triad of cosmic inquiry. Meditation is the essence — the formless, the mystical spirit of the universe. Mathematics is the potential — the abstract, the archetype, the latent possibility of the universe. And code — code is the expression, the form, the physical manifestation of the universe. Together, they form a complete triad of practice and study: essence, abstraction, and manifestation; light, mind, and matter; formless, potential, and form.

Coding completes our mathematical practice. We contemplate mathematics in the mind’s eye, seeing its self-evident nature through the direct perception of abstract truth. Coding also expands upon mathematical elegance to include the abstractions of logic and algorithm, enriching our complete comprehension of abstract structure.

A Meditative Class of Blissful Contemplation

To be a meditative class is to move through contemplation gracefully — to maintain connection with the blissfulness, the silence, the love. These classes include a simultaneous engagement in meditation, mindfulness, and contemplation — the Three Key Ingredients of Enlightenment. Meditation is silence. Mathematics is conception. Coding is action. We seek to integrate the three in a full-spectrum cultivation of the cosmic self.


If contemplation brings you into silence and freedom, you ride that wave. A well-ordered mind — a subjectively lucid mind — is a mind that can enter into stillness, a mind that can go beyond the mind, beyond itself. When we do mathematics and coding from a place of gracefulness, of gentleness, of love, of humility, we retain spiritual energy — and that energy flows through us in the optimal expression and engagement of our practice.

The Zen Koan of Code

Each class is focused on a particular mathematical topic. We learn to comprehend this topic to the degree that it can be programmatically communicated in the language of Java, or another language if needed. The mathematical abstraction we focus on becomes our Zen koan, our yantra or mantra, our object of devotion, our talisman of knowledge. What we focus on, we become — and when we focus on mathematics, we become pristine and eternal, pure and lucid. Our contemplation, and its programmatic expression, stores metaphysical power by which we can pivot, navigate, and rise within the dimensions of mind.

Naturally interrelated and mutually supportive.

Mathematics, meditation, and coding are naturally interrelated and mutually supportive. Meditation offers a state of mind beneficial to clear mathematical thought. Mathematical study makes the mind more conducive to meditative absorption while also bringing greater elegance to code. Coding offers mathematics a path of expression while further refining the mind for meditative lucidity and transcendence. If one’s interest leans toward any one of these three disciplines, it is natural to invite the others as supplementary and supportive cultivations.

Coding as Poetry: The Transmission of the Abstract into Syntax

In this class, coding is poetry. Our practice goes beyond seeking a sufficient working result to the semantically accurate description of our inner comprehension. Poetry is a transmission of the ineffable into the word; coding the transmission of the abstract into syntax. Our coding is an activity of refinement in which we learn to convey more powerfully, more directly, with fewer symbols and greater elegance — a purer distillation of our knowing — so that our syntactical expression is programmatically poetic. Our aspiration is what we want to feel in the structure; for the poet takes the state of the poem, and we take the state of our code.
